Houseplant Feature - Peperomia obtusifolia

I am so in love with this plant - mine lives at the top of the stairs in a sage green glazed pot with a face on it. I’m amazed she lives because I forget to water her all the time, she is on a windowsil but it faces out onto next door and doesn’t get much light. She’s unstoppable, kicking out lovely, round, glossy leaves and white spathes of flowers.

The Peperomia obtusifolia is native to Mexico and South America, and the common name is Baby Rubber Plant. It is not actually related to the Ficus rubber plants at all, and is non-toxic to pets.

It is compact and clump forming, perfers to be underwatered, and doesn’t need much light so it is a great plant for beginners or those less inclined to remember watering days. Like all leafy plants, it should be treated to a houseplant food once a month during the growing season May - September.

If a varigated leaf is more your aesthetic, the P. obtusifolia also has a varigated variety with beautiful creamy and green leaves.
